Visa & Permit
- ENTRY VISA
With Admission Notice, JW201 Form or JW202 Form and Foreigner Medical Check-up Form, a student may apply for a Studying Visa in Chinese Embassy abroad.
(1) X1 Visa: it is a long term visa for studying in China, which is for any person studying in China for a long period (over 180 days). Normally, a student applies for it with Admission Notice as well as JW 201 Form or JW202 Form in their local Chinese Embassy or Consulate.
Any foreign student who studies in China for over 6 months must apply for his/her Residence Permit. Any foreign student with X1 Visa has to complete all the procedures for Residence Permit within 30 days after he/she enters China, otherwise, he/she will be fined or punished.
(2) X2 Visa: it is a short term visa for studying, which is for any person studying in China for a short period (within 180 days). The date is calculated from the time when a student enters China, and it can be extended only once, but maximum duration couldn’t be over 180 days in total.
- APPLY FOR RESIDENCE PERMIT FOR THE FIRST TIME
Any student who will study in China for over 6 months and need multiple entries must apply for Residence Permit. Any student holding a non-ordinary passport has to apply for Residence Permit after he/she changes it into an ordinary passport. Normally, the teacher-in-charge will help every freshman apply for Residence Permit at the first time, and then he/she will extend it by himself/herself from the second time on. Required materials are as follows:
(1) Valid passport and valid visa (X1 Visa);
(2) Visa / Stay Permit / Residence Permit Application Form (Website appointment sheet);
(3) One applicant’s standard (2-inches in size) photograph taken recently. The same digital photograph is also required to submit when apply for Residence Permit for the first time (The bar code of the photograph shall be kept on file by the Security Bureau, so the photograph submitted should be taken and printed out at site of the Bureau);
(4) Registration Form for International Students Living outside Campus from local police station or Registration Form for International Students Living on Campus from the Business Center in the dormitory building;
(5) Original medical check-up result from Tianjin Entry–exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (Tianjin International Travel Healthcare Center) (If any student fails the check-up, our university has the right to reject him/her);
(6) Admission Notice;
(7) Visa or Residence Permit application form from university;
(8) Yellow page of JW201 Form or JW202 Form;
- EXTEND RESIDENCE PERMIT
A student should extend his/her Residence Permit by himself/herself in the Security Bureau before it expires. The student should contact his/her teacher-in-charge 30 days prior to having on-line appointment made, and confirm the date he/she wishes to approach the Bureau for the extension. Besides, materials are required as follows:
(1) Valid Residence Permit;
(2) Visa / Stay Permit / Residence Permit Application Form (Website appointment sheet);
(3) One applicant’s standard (2-inches) photograph taken recently;
(4) Registration Form for International Students Living outside Campus from local police station or Registration Form for International Students Living on Campus from the Business Center in the dormitory building;
(5) Visa or Residence Permit application form from university;
- VALIDITY OF RESIDENCE PERMIT
(1) For a self-funded student: Within the validity of passport, if a student in Tianjin Medical University pays the tuition for the whole academic year (1 year), he/she may apply for Residence Permit with 11-month validity; if he/she pays the tuition for just 1 semester (6 months), he/she may apply for Residence Permit with only 6-month validity.
(2) For a scholarship student: within the validity of his/her passport, a scholarship student in Tianjin Medical University can apply for Residence Permit with the validity which lasts until his/her major study finishes.
In the following situations, a student has to apply for a new Residence Permit, and change its validity.
A. A student renews his/her passport or changes some details on the Residence Permit;
B. Within the validity of the Residence Permit, if a student breaches any Chinese law or school regulations, the university will shorten his/her validity length of Residence Permit, or change it into other type of visa.
- COST AND TIME
(1) Cost:
within 1 year: ¥400 RMB / person each time
From 1 year (inclusive) - 3 years: ¥800 RMB / person each time
From 3 years (inclusive) - 5 years: ¥1000RMB / person each time
To change the detail(s) of the Residence Permit: ¥200 RMB / person each time
Stay Permit: ¥160 RMB / person each time
(2) Time needed for process: 5 working days (public holidays excluded)
(3) Working time:
Monday to Thursday: 9:00am - 5:00pm
Friday: 9:00am - 4:00pm

- CHANGE(S) AND CANCELLATION OF THE RESIDENCE PERMIT
(1) For changing the details of Residence Permit: if any detail of the Residence Permit changes, including the purpose of staying, passport number, university, dependents etc., the student needs to apply for a new Residence Permit within 10 days after the change takes place. In addition to the normal materials needed for Residence Permit application, relevant documents have to be submitted at the same time:
A. For changing his/her passport number, the new passport should be submitted along with his/her previous passport or the Proof of Loss of Passport;
B. For changing his/her university, the following documents are needed: Admission Notice from the new university and the certificate from previous university. If the former university acts as his/her guardian, the letter of guardianship from the new university is needed.
(2) For student transferring to our university: if a student transfers to our university with a valid visa obtained from another city, he/she needs to apply for a new Residence Permit with Certificate of No Criminal Record, Transferring Permit from former university or relevant department as well as all the required materials for Residence Permit. The medical check-up result is not necessary.
(3) For transferring to another university from our university: for various reasons, any student wishes to leave our university, quit studying at our school, or is expelled from school, he/she should have his/her Residence Permit cancelled at the Entry-Exit Security Bureau with relevant documents from school.
(4) In case of a death: if any student dies in China, his/her relative, guardian or agent should get that student’s Residence Permit cancelled at the Entry-Exit Security Bureau with Death Certificate.
- REISSUE PASSPORT AND RESIDENCE PERMIT
(1) A Proof of Loss of Passport from local police station in charge of the area where the passport was lost;
(2) A Police Report for the loss of passport from the Entry-Exit Security Bureau by providing the Proof of Loss of Passport;
(3) A new passport from his/her own country’s embassy or consulate in China;
(4) Within 30 days, apply for a new visa or Residence Permit from the Entry-Exit Security Bureau. In addition to all the materials required for Residence Permit application, the original Police Report for the loss of passport from the Entry-Exit Security Bureau or the original letter from his/her embassy is also required.
- STUDENT RELATIVES’ VISA AND RESIDENCE PERMIT
As a spouse or relative (with foreign nationality) of an international student, he/she can’t apply for a Residence Permit with validity longer than that student’s. In addition to the normal materials needed for Residence Permit application, he/she may apply for his/her Residence Permit at the Entry-Exit Security Bureau by providing the following materials:
(1) Visa or Residence Permit application form from university;
(2) Student’s valid passport and valid Residence Permit;
(3) His/her relative’s valid passport (ordinary) and valid visa;
(4) For the spouse of a student, the Certificate of Marriage is required; for his/her child, Certificate of Birth is needed; for his/her parent, the Certificate of Relationship should be provided. (If there is any change on the above certificates, it must be authenticated by Chinese Embassy or Consulate in that country. All the materials in foreign language should be translated into Chinese.)
Besides, for any international student’s new-born baby in China, within 60 days from birth, his/her parents or agents have to apply for the baby’s Residence Permit with the Certificate of Birth at the Entry-Exit Security Bureau.
- PLEASE NOTE
(1) If a passport or visa / Residence Permit expires, it is considered as illegally residing. The student concerned will be warned or fined ¥500 RMB each day (maximum ¥10,000 RMB in total) or detained for 3 to 10 days by the Security Bureau according to Law of the People’s Republic of China on Control of the Entry and Exit of Aliens.
(2) Information on the Residence Permit is not allowed to be added or changed, e.g. name, passport number, identity, work place or host university or address. If anything changes, the holder has to register the change at the local police station within 10 days. Otherwise, he/she will be warned or fined (maximum ¥500 RMB); in serious case, he/she will be ordered to leave China within a limited timeframe.
(3) For an international student or his/her relative over the age of 16 who is residing in China, the person should carry his/her passport and other proof of identity (e.g. student ID card or Campus ID card) with himself/herself in order to be checked by foreign affairs policemen. If regarded as necessary, relevant department (e.g. Public Security Bureau) has the power to summon him/her for a Residence Permit inspection at the department responsible for Entry-Exit management.
(4) For an international student with the purpose of staying in China to study, he/she can’t be employed in China without approval from the relevant department in charge.
